The South Caucasus region is marked by long-term tense relations between Turkey and Armenia (stemming from the Armenian genocide, 1915-1921); the transition to democracy in Armenia (the Velvet Revolution of 2018); the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed area of Nagorno-Karabakh that led to a war this year; and the overarching ambition of Russia to reassert its control over the region. We will examine each of these.
