In following the road to the American Revolution, a number of subjects invariably come up. These include the concept of “taxation without representation” and natural rights. Also included are key events such as the Stamp Act, the Coercive Acts, the Boston Massacre, and many others. Not as frequently mentioned, but significant nonetheless are religious issues, particularly in Massachusetts. This course will explore the religious issues in the pre-revolutionary period and the role that a Martha’s Vineyard born Congregational minister, Jonathan Mayhew, played in the development of revolutionary thought.
