In Henry IV, Part I, Shakespeare explores royal legitimacy and the limits hedging the power of a king. In so doing, he also creates one of the greatest comic – and human — characters in all of literature: Sir John Falstaff.   In this four-week course we will examine issues of English history and Shakespeare’s idea of history. We will read Henry IV Part I, look at scenes from Henry IV Part II, and use two (or more) film versions to provide contrasting views of the play.
