As World War II was ending, a farsighted report advocated for a national science policy and led to the role of the federal government as the major supporter of basic research. This support established America as the unchallenged leader in science and contributed substantially to its remarkable economic growth. America’s leadership is now being challenged by abrupt changes in government policy and by growing competition abroad.
