Four classes: April 7, 14, 28, and May 5 from
10:30 – 12:00
Astonishing technological developments have led to observing gravitational waves in space and confirming the existence of particles such as Higgs Boson, both of which won Nobel Prizes, as well as to advances in personal communication instruments. Rather than happening in a vacuum, they build on the prior work of scientists and engineers. The last class explores how wireless communication has progressed from early ship-to-shore connections to the smart phone, via a visit to the Wireless Today Gallery at the Marconi Museum in Chatham. Participants will drive to the museum (about 6 miles from Snow Library). Carpools/shared rides to the museum can be arranged during the first three classes. Each participant will be asked to pay the museum entrance fee of $7.50.
4/7: Gravitational Astronomy
4/14: CERN – Before the Large Hadron Collider and Higgs Boson
4/28: CERN – More recent findings regarding sub-atomic particles
5/5: Evolution of the Cell Phone. Marconi Maritime Museum Tour, 831 Orleans Rd (Route 28), Chatham
