Professor Donald Baker Memorial Poetry Event
For over a decade, the Friends of Snow Library have sponsored a poetry reading by students of the Nauset Regional Middle School during April, National Poetry Month, as a memorial to Professor Donald Baker, a former English teacher at Nauset Regional High School.
This annual program features 12 middle school students selected by the NMS faculty to read and present their works at Poetry Night at Snow Library.
The event is enhanced by a string quartet of students from NMS who play prior to the readings and during the break.
The students also publish a full color Portfolio of their works that also includes artwork from students at the school.
The Friends of Snow Library provide the venue at the library, give each student a gift certificate to a local bookstore and provide funding for the Portfolio published by the students and distributed to students and guests.
Dr. Peter Saunders, a founder of the program, professor of poetry at Cape Cod Community College and a published poet in his own right, reads from his latest publication and generously gives each student a copy of one of his books.
Book and Author Luncheon
A major fundraiser for the Friends in the past has been the Book and Author Luncheon.
Over the years the Friends have invited well-known authors to be guest speakers at an area restaurant where everyone enjoys a gourmet luncheon. These events are usually scheduled in the spring or fall, and tickets go on sale through the Friends and the library.
Past noted authors have included Nathaniel Philbrick, Peter Abrahams and Matthew Pearl. There is always a book signing following the talk with books provided by a local Orleans book store.
Volunteers to help organize the luncheon are always welcome!
Fourth of July Parade
The Orleans Fourth of July Parade is a huge annual event in town, and each year the Friends participate with a decorated float and a large banner. Over the years they have won several awards for their creative endeavors and recently placed third in the non-profit sector in 2017.
In past years, volunteers distributed books to children along the parade route. Once this became too cumbersome, they distributed coupons instead, allowing each child to come to the library and select a free book. Children come in year- round with their coupons and ultimately spend time finding other books as well!
The Friends are always looking for volunteers to help with the Parade, either decorating the float, driving the truck, carrying the banner or distributing coupons. It’s a great day for Friends in Orleans!
The Snow Library in Orleans was transformed into a nine hole mini-golf course Saturday Feb. 2, 2019 complete with bumps, jumps, hills, twists and loops.
