Populist authoritarians have been sprinkled throughout history. They’ve shared certain characteristics which might be informative for us. We will discuss them and explore two examples. One is the 15th century Florentine friar Girolamo Savonarola. The other is the Louisiana politician of the 1920s and early 30s, Huey Long. We will consider each of them in depth (one each week) in an attempt to learn lessons.
