Let’s leave Western Europe and America for a while. Asian masters have discovered unique ways of using the medium and expanding its potential. Whether integrating the traditions of Asian woodcuts and drawing, documenting the essence of Asian cultures, or creating intimate, psychological evocations of the human soul, their artistic and social visions reveal something special, something that stretches the imagination. We’ll look at works from Japan’s Shomei Tomatsu and Eikoh Hosoe, India’s Raghu Rai and Dayanita Singh, China’s Ho Fan and Taca Sui, Korea’s Bae Bien-u and Noh Suntag, and other influential craftsmen across Asia’s many peoples. Plus, we’ll finish with a look at up-and-coming photographers whose work today sustains and enriches an Asian appreciation of the world.
