In 1876 Tchaikovsky was approached with the idea of writing a piece of music to the Shakespearean play Hamlet! An idea that he found very exciting but “devilishly challenging.” Several other composers had written music for Hamlet, and most of them followed the plot line, but not Tchaikovsky! We will do a deep dive and look into the masterful orchestration of Tchaikovsky’s “Overture to Hamlet” using lots of videos and images and even screen shots of the score. This talk is for everyone who loves Shakespeare and listens to music not just for musicians. You will come away from this presentation with a deeper understanding of the creative process that is necessary to create a masterpiece that endures.
