America was founded as a utopian experiment. Whether it was the Pilgrims in Plymouth Bay, the Quakers in Pennsylvania, or the Founders themselves, our society was designed to be one in which all human beings are equal and equally entitled to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” But what that pursuit should look like is as varied as the population of this nation. This course will look at our many attempts to define that most elusive of goals: The American Dream. Thinkers as diverse as Abigail Adams, Hunter S. Thompson, Martin Luther King Jr., Arthur Miller, Lorraine Hansbury, and Lerner and Lowe have tried to define it. Let’s find out what we think.
