During the day Charles Ives worked as an insurance executive in NYC; at night he spent his time composing at home. Ives’s musical compositions were highly experimental, and much of his art was not heard until after his death. As Ives’s music became more widely known, his fame spread quickly. Europe, which was unimpressed with the American musical tradition, quickly took note of his profound music. Aaron Copland, who came on the scene following Ives, continued to build upon Ives’s rich musical tradition and would ultimately give America its own musical voice by incorporating folk, jazz, and American sacred musical elements in his concert works.
