Rather than the traditional way of looking at American history by marching through time, this course will look thematically at the development of America in the post Civil War era by focusing on race and class. We will look at how the freed slave and the new immigrant interacted with existing society and how all were impacted by the rise of industry. The 1860s to the 1920s was a pivotal time period in the development of the America that we all know.
